Mark Abdelnour
Candidature — Surgery & Surgical Subspecialty Representative
Dear colleagues,
My name is Mark Abdelnour, and I am a PGY-1 resident in Orthopaedic Surgery at McGill. I am seeking election as a Surgery and Surgical Subspecialty Representative because I believe that meaningful resident advocacy begins with being approachable, engaged, and committed to representing colleagues with integrity.
Throughout my academic journey, I have consistently sought opportunities to bring people together and improve the communities I have been part of. Whether founding a student research organization, leading faculty initiatives, mentoring junior students, or organizing conferences and wellness events, I have learned that good leadership is built on listening first, communicating clearly, and turning ideas into action. Those experiences taught me the importance of collaboration and gave me the confidence to advocate for others in constructive and practical ways.
As a new resident, I also recognize the unique perspective that comes with starting training. The transition into residency has reinforced how important it is to have representatives who are accessible, transparent, and genuinely invested in the well-being and success of their peers. My goal is to ensure that residents feel comfortable bringing forward their concerns, suggestions, and ideas, knowing they will be heard and represented thoughtfully.
Having completed my Master's in Experimental Surgery at McGill before medical school and now returning for residency, I have had the privilege of experiencing different training environments and working alongside residents from diverse programs. That perspective has shown me that some of the best improvements come from open communication and collaboration across specialties.
If elected, I will work hard to be a reliable voice for surgical residents, communicate openly, advocate respectfully, and contribute to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and positive training environment for all.
Thank you for your consideration.
